First stop was a temple on top of a big hill. The temple had the usual golden stupa and also views of the surrounding countryside. First task was to walk up the steep steps to the temple which were lined on both sides by the body of dragons as hand rails.
The temple also had bells and gongs which you were allowed to ring for good luck. The kids enjoyed making plenty of din without anyone appearing to mind.
At the drop off point were lots of souvenir stores, we spotted some very tacky giant fans. We also saw some really smart embroidered dragons, after some shopping around and some negotiation we came away with a very fine beaded dragon.
We then went back down to the town for a quick look around with our guide. He showed us some more temples and the location for the night market.(more later)
We got back to the hotel in time for a quick dip in the pool before being picked up by a chef for cookery classes. First we went to the market to learn about buying the ingredients. The chef had an excellent sense of humour which made the class great fun. He took us to his kitchen just outside town and taught us how to make tom yum soup, green curry, red curry, pad thai noodles, sweet and sour vegetables, chicken and cashew nut and mango and sweet rice for dessert. The kids couldn't do the cooking on their own but were happy to watch, join in and eat the results. This formed our dinner for the evening.
After the food was finished we were driven back into town and dropped off at the night market. Hundreds of stalls selling various sorts of souvenirs at super cheap prices (especially compared to Japan)
We then found a small bar for a drink with live music. Turned out the landlord was from Liverpool and his wife was Thai. Don't worry it wasn't the 'English Pub' we turned our noses up at that one.
